2008 is by far the biggest year in the video game industry as it reached new heights with record breaking sales. The competitors (Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo) and their respective system managed to popularize video games more than ever. So which system ended up having the best year in terms of video game quality? Let’s rank the six current video game systems on the market.

6. PSP

The PSP started out great in 2008 with a trio of top-notch exclusive games in Patapon, God of War: Chains of Olympus and Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII. After March ended, however, gamers have a slim picking on only a handful of good but not great games available for the rest of the year. It seems like many developers are moving away from the PSP and would rather focus on other video game systems.

5. Playstation 2

It is hard to believe the Playstation 2 is still producing quality games after being on the market for more than nine years. In addition to the usual multiplatform offerings, the Playstation 2 was home to three incredible games: Yakuza 2, Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3 FES and Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4. So while the best-selling system may be slowly fading away, it is still producing great games in the process.

4. Nintendo Wii

Despite being far and away the fastest selling video game system in history, the Nintendo Wii really struggled in 2008 in terms of software quality. It had an amazing start of the year with Wii Fit and Super Smash Bros. Brawl headlining the great lineup. However, the quality seemed to fizzle out by the second half of the year with no noticeable standout game released for the Nintendo Wii during the second half of the year.

3. Nintendo DS

2008 was just another great year for the Nintendo DS as the handheld system got a steady stream of great games throughout the year. From The World Ends With You in the spring to Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia in the holiday season, the number of quality releases just did not stop. So while it is missing the big must have game, the Nintendo DS makes it up by offering a diverse lineup of quality titles.

2. Xbox 360

The Xbox 360 followed an incredible 2007 with another great year of gaming in 2008. The year bought remarkable multiplatform titles like Fallout 3 and Grand Theft Auto IV (with exclusive downloadable content on the Xbox 360 to boot) in addition to great exclusives with Fable 2 and Gears of War II. The Xbox Live Arcade also produced some quality titles in the likes of Braid and Castle Crashers. Although it doesn’t quite match the lineup 2007, the Xbox 360 came pretty close with the numerous quality games in 2008.

1. Playstation 3

2008 was the coming out year for the Playstation 3. It was the exclusive home to some of the best video games released in the year like LittleBigPlanet and Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. In addition, third-party support has also ramped up as the Playstation 3 has nearly the same identical lineup of game as the Xbox 360. Not to mention the Playstation Network matured throughout 2008 with incredible titles like PixelJunk Monsters and Wipeout HD leading the charge. With slightly better exclusive games, the Playstation 3 gets the edge over the Xbox 360 for being the best video game system in 2008.
